Mukhtar Ansari, the five-time MLA from Uttar Pradesh's Mau, died of cardiac arrest on Thursday evening, after which a probe was ordered to investigate his death.

The gangster-politician, who was lodged in Banda district jail, was rushed to Rani Durgavati Medical College as his health deteriorated reportedly after he ended his Ramzan fast. Doctors were first called to the jail to treat him, but he was rushed to the hospital after medics suspected he had a cardiac arrest.

He was brought to the hospital at 8.25 pm in an unconscious state. A panel of nine doctors were treating him, but he died of cardiac arrest.

Meanwhile, a magisterial probe was ordered to investigate the death of Mukhtar Ansari, after his family alleged foul play. Speaking to reporters, Ansari's son, Umar Ansari, said his father was given poison through the food served to him.

This comes as days earlier, Ansari told a Barabanki court that he was served food laced with poison inside the prison.

On March 26, Ansari was hospitalised for around 14 hours after he complained of abdominal pain. He was diagnosed with Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) and was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of a hospital, sources said. The doctors had advised him to undergo surgery.
